2023 by the Numbers

Powering a Movement

In 2022, we created a team specifically dedicated to movement support – we consolidated all of our resources under a new hub for group support, which launched in Spring 2023. This new group support hub is a centralized location for our best-in-class suite of services dedicated to ensuring that Indivisible groups have the tools, training, and resources they need to drive change wherever they are.

Building leadership through deep support and member listening.
Via quarterly surveys of Indivisible group leaders, we’ve gathered ongoing feedback from the Indivisible movement to best meet their evolving needs. We’ve found that leaders feel supported by our programming, reporting an average of 5.5 on a scale from 1-7. In 2023, Indivisibles identified member engagement and leadership development as their top challenges. In response, we have experimented with new ways to support Indivisible group growth – specifically in the areas of recruitment and leadership development within existing groups. Insights from these experiments will shape future movement support offerings.
Building community with centralized spaces and caucuses.
By connecting groups with tailored resources and organizing support for statewide convenings (both on and offline), we’ve built stronger Indivisible networks in 24 states—all aimed at building lasting progressive organizing infrastructure across the country. And, we supported peer learning among Indivisibles with varied constituencies, like our Rural and BIPOC Caucuses. Recent meetings of the BIPOC Caucus have included a focus on cultivating mental wellness through unpacking trauma, discovering psychological safety, and engaging in solutions-oriented conversations to drive sustainable change. The Rural Caucus held a summer summit with tailored guidance on how to get media attention in news deserts. We continue to support peer learning and connection spaces amongst Indivisibles.
Building capacity through direct financial support to local groups.
Indivisible distributed over $452,000 in direct financial support to hundreds of local Indivisible groups. As part of our distributed fundraising program, Indivisible groups leveraged these matching funds to fundraise for their organizing efforts, including expenses like materials for rallies and actions, relationship-building opportunities, and postcarding efforts. For example, one group noted that the matching funds “brought in a few new supporters who had not donated previously. This helped them feel invested in the work of our chapter.” Through our GROW (Grassroots Organizing Wins) grants program, Indivisible groups receive direct financial support for collaborative and capacity-building efforts.

How Indivisibles Use Funds

In February, several Indivisible groups in NY-22 came together to host a summit in Cazenovia, NY with 125 attendees to collaborate, brainstorm, and plan for the coming year’s organizing work in the state.

In May, Indivisible groups in Indiana hosted a statewide summit to rejuvenate groups and build for the future of progressive activism in the state. Training sessions were held on recruitment and capacity building. And it was the first statewide convening of groups in Indiana — an important opportunity to build for the future.

In October, an Indivisible group in Fairfax, VA hosted a conference about the attacks on local schools. Attendees included educators, community members, students, and parents — it was a great opportunity for the community to convene and strategize about how to defeat the rightwing overreach into school curriculums.
